It is stated that you can become a villain or as a hero. Now, Christian Bale has indeed turned villain once again, this time with Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is formidable, and the plot is true to the comic-book tale as well and brings back fans’ favorite, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). It also has the outrageous humor that is unique to director Taika Waititi. Love and Thunder is a movie that is a stand-alone that doesn’t match the quality of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a major part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however, his solo films have either been successful or failed to hit the mark completely. While the origins story, Thor (2011) was an okay start, Thor: The Dark World (2013) was the most awful entry. In the end, Thor: Ragnarok 2017 will be in everyone’s most-watched five MCU films. The Reunion of the Hemsworth and Waititi collaboration meant expectations were sky-high ahead of the movie’s release.
If Gorr (Bale) the god of war, who is determined to eliminate gods after being cheated by one, decides on attacking New Asgard to steal the Stormbreaker, Thor has to stop the god killer by forming a team with Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Waititi) and his ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who has turned into Mighty Thor. The story is straightforward, unlike the recent Marvel films and the actors are great in the film. Hemsworth is the main character, who’s in a midlife crisis. However, Bale as well as Portman are outstanding. To show Bale’s capabilities as a director, the pre-title credits scene stands. Gorr could have been the next Thanos for MCU that’s in desperate need of good supervillains and Bale has a distinct creepiness to the character, however, there’s nothing a much more.
On the other hand, Portman, who makes her return to the Marvel world following her absence from the two previous Thor films, is the cancer-afflicted ex-girlfriend picked by Mjolnir. Given how Marvel is willing to hand over the roles of Hawkeye and, within a couple of weeks, Hulk, to women characters, I had hoped for that the Mighty Thor to be a similar checkmark on the list of representation. The film is a touching tale of an astrophysicist who is able to show her biceps in more scenes than one.
Marvel also offers its own doing a variety of cameos. Alongside the complete Guardians of the Galaxy team as well as Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth reprising their roles from Thor: Ragnarok as Loki, Odin, and Thor respectively. Melissa McCarthy and Ben Falcone are also known as Hela and the director for the Asgardian play. There’s also the recurring gag of Thor trying to find his Mjolnir while being afraid by Stormbreaker’s jealousy. The gags are entertaining, but they’re at the expense of deep emotions. They also reveal the superficial plot. Thor: Love and Thunder explores a variety of types of affection, from father-daughter relationships to complex romances between discordant lovers… There is a connection between Gorr losing his respect towards Rapu and Thor getting disillusioned with Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). The ideas are endless, however…
There are numerous movie references like Harry Potter and Interstellar, as well as Easter eggs. A picture of Falligar, the dead god, is shown, directly from comic books. We can see Hemsworth sporting the first Thor costume that comic-book readers recognize. In a battle with Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We also see a tattoo reading ‘RIP Loki The helmet of the trickster on the back of our Viking. The terrible Necrosword is revealed, and it’s fascinating the different weapons shown as being able to control people, given the manner in which Stormbreaker and Mjolnir appear to have their own minds.
This has been seen with the ten rings of Shang Chi, the magical Bangle from Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade from the post-credits scene from Eternals. Following Marvel’s latest show, Moonknight, the line, “Gods will use you but not allow you to be empowered” is extremely relatable. A little of Valkyrie’s loss during war to her most trusted friend and Korg falling in love with a different Kronan man are also included.
We are reminded of Ragnarok’s colors in the initial part, but much of the second half is set in the dark realm of black and white. The fact remains that the action scenes shot in monochrome are quite enjoyable.
Hemsworth as Thor is here to stay However, it’s an incredible relief for MCU fans who have seen the original Avengers either sacrifice their lives, or hang up their boots.
